When to switch from co-sleeping to the cot?

One of the most frequent doubts that first-time moms and dads have is when they should move their children from co-sleeping to the cradle . The practice of co-sleeping entails submitting to disparate and conflicting opinions , in the same way that the decision to stop practicing it does.

From Alondra we want to convey to you the security you need to make that decision with total freedom. Advising you on everything you need is one of our main objectives, so... Let's get to it!

From co-sleeping to cradle

Happiness and uncertainty are two feelings that invade new parents from the moment they hear the great news. But let us tell you that doubts and fears about what will be best for the little one are normal.

The need to have closer contact with the mother is greater in the first months of the baby's life. Co -sleeping allows children to provide a quick response to this need.

Alondra advises you

sidecar mini cradle to practice co-sleeping

The Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality in the Clinical Practice Guide on breastfeeding recommends that in order to practice co-sleeping safely, a sidecar cradle or wooden co-sleeping cradles with the characteristics for co-sleeping should be used.

A sidecar crib is one with which to practice co-sleeping with the crib attached to the parent's bed. Therefore, it must have specific characteristics and components that allow the cot to be attached to the large bed.

This is called safe co-sleeping , since the baby will always have its space and a suitable rest environment designed specifically for it.

But, when should we stop practicing co-sleeping?

As you already know, around this issue there are as many opinions as there are people...

The truth is that the answer is quite simple. Co -sleeping favors breastfeeding and, in turn, breastfeeding reduces the risk of sudden infant death syndrome. Therefore, stopping co -sleeping could occur when the baby no longer bases its main diet on breast milk.

If co-sleeping is practiced in a crib equipped for it, one option is to start passing it to the individual crib after six months . At this age the baby is still too young to sleep in a room alone, but can continue to sleep in the parent's room with the conventional crib.

But, on the other hand, you should not specifically determine the end of co-sleeping for the purpose of breastfeeding. SIDS can be dangerous up to one year of age , so having your baby sleep close to you is important. In this way, whether or not you practice co-sleeping , you can be more aware of it if you sleep in the same room .

One of the main objectives of co-sleeping is to reduce the fear or stress that both the baby and the parents can experience when sleeping at night . What this practice entails is that both parties enjoy a restful rest and a deeper sleep.

For this reason, the transition period between co-sleeping and crib requires patience. It is logical to do it little by little! In this way, you can test how the little one reacts and see which rhythm is the most suitable for you.

Another factor that determines this change may be the dimensions and the speed with which the child grows. If the co-sleeping is practiced in a mini-cradle , at the moment when it does not fit more in it, it will be the moment to produce the change.

What we want to convey to you from Alondra is that there is no general rule or specific guidelines for making the change. So now you know... Each case is different, set your own pace!

Alondra's advice

You must bear in mind that, although we tell you first-hand, it must be the medical and nursing staff who advise you correctly on the steps to follow to make the changes with your little one.

In addition, the 60x120 cm cot- beds are ideal for preparing the transition from a cot to a 90 cm bed . Why are they perfect for making the change?

Both models can be transformed into 60x120 cm children's beds , so your little one can have their own adult bed from very early on. The child barrier kit is optional and can be used to add more security to this transition.

After use as a bed, both options reach another stage of growth for your little one. In this way, they become a beautiful desk ideal for preparing your own study or craft area.

As if that were not enough, the OMNI cot-bed adds one more use and can serve your little angel as a children's sofa, taking advantage of the junior railing.

If you consider designing your baby's room in a Montessori style , these options are designed to move your little one directly from the mini-crib to the bed . Our Montessori beds will allow your little one to acquire more autonomy and independence when it comes to going to sleep.

On the other hand, starting early to practice the Montessori method greatly facilitates the transition to the large 90 cm bed. By creating a suitable and safe space to develop this philosophy, you will be able to enhance your little one's self -learning .

From Alondra we want to give you all our support and understanding. The process to go from co-sleeping to the crib is something very intimate and depends on each child and each family. So, enjoy every moment with your little one and don't be obsessed with the changes!
